THE JOURNEY
Derica’s dedication to the arts began with her discipline in costume design and fine art at The School for Creative and Performing Arts in her hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. Her training in Art History, the study of aesthetic objects in their historical development and stylistic context, has always been an influence. Upon earning her undergraduate degree, Art History and History minoring in African American Studies, Derica obtained her Masters of Arts in Visual Culture: Costume Studies from New York University. She began her career as an intern at Tom Ford PR, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Duro Olowu, Art Production Fund, and Kim Heirston Art Advisory; a Costume Curatorial Fellow at the Cincinnati Art Museum, Design Coordinator at DDC interior design firm, and the Installation Curator at the Fashion Institute for Design and Merchandising Museum Motion Picture Costume Exhibition.
Inspired by art, culture and style, she was able to translate her expertise in research into a career path as a costume designer. She continues her craft and is also a consultant to interior and fashion designers, filmmakers and industry clientele.
